THE digital connection of rural communities in Scotland is crucial to the future of the country and the Scottish Government is working on new contracts to ensure that it meets its commitment of the 100 per cent roll-out of super-fast broadband by 2021.
That message was delivered today by Fergus Ewing MSP, Cabinet Secretary for the Rural Economy and Connectivity, when he addressed the Scottish Rural Parliament meeting at the Community Campus in Brechin, Angus.
The Cabinet Secretary said that many people in rural locations felt disconnected and some felt that money which could have helped to resolve their problems was often directed towards urban issues.
He said that First Minister Nicola Sturgeon had charged him with driving forward the rural economy and that the issue of broadband connectivity was at the top of agendas in all of the rural political constituencies.
He said that 7,000 homes and businesses were being connected every week as part of a £140m contract and revealed that new contracts were at an advanced stage to ensure connectivity for the whole of Scotland.
The Cabinet Secretary praised the work of Scottish Rural Action, which organises the Rural Parliament, in becoming a strong and recognised voice for the needs of rural Scotland.
