International conference set to mark Scotland’s Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design 2016
THE Scottish Government’s Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Fiona Hyslop MSP, will give the opening address at the ‘Outlook: Exploring Geddes in the 21st Century’, a two-day interactive conference 18-19 August, Edinburgh.
In the spirit of Scotland’s Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design 2016, educational charity PAS (Planning Aid Scotland) will host a two-day international conference in Edinburgh this August to celebrate the impact and legacy of Scots polymath, botanist and founding father of town planning, Sir Patrick Geddes.
The conference will involve a series of interactive seminars and workshops, fusing together strands of academic and practice-based thinking from Scotland and all around the world.
The first day will hear from young people about their sense of place as well as a range of leading thinkers, artists, architects, educationalists, planners. Day two will provide opportunities for creative, hands-on art and design workshops inspired by Geddes.
Petra Biberbach, chief executive of PAS, said: “Founding Father of town planning, Sir Patrick Geddes, blurred the boundaries between work, family and play – he saw ‘life as whole’ and inspired many people around him to do the same.”
The conference will also hear contributions from a number of young people who have been taking part in the PAS ‘Young Placemakers’ Award, who have been using Patrick Geddes’ approach of ‘survey, analysis, plan’ to explore, understand and think about how their places could change for the future.
