A WELL-known Aberdeen facility offering care for the elderly has welcomed nursing students from both sides of the Atlantic during a special study tour.
The Grampian-Houston Association, in association with the Robert Gordon University (RGU), annually runs an exchange programme for students of nursing between RGU and Houston Baptist University (HBU), to give those learning the profession the chance to gain experience in an international setting.
During a packed schedule, Megan Aracena and Ruth Gilligan from RGU were joined by HBU students, Ciera Newbell and Victoria Simms, for a range of healthcare and nursing clinical days and visits, as well as a range of social activities including meetings with Aberdeen Lord Provost George Adam and Aberdeenshire Provost Hamish Vernal.
In addition, the Grampian-Houston Association treated the students to a private tour of Castle Fraser, Kemnay, followed by dinner.
Their visit to Rubislaw Park Care Home in Aberdeen was hosted by director of care, Kristin Jackson-Brown, who gave the students an insight into elderly and person-centred care during a tour and afternoon tea.
Ms Jackson-Brown said: “From my own professional experience, I know how important and fulfilling international opportunities such as this can be in furthering knowledge and adding expertise.
“We were delighted that the UK and US students were able to join us to focus on our sector of care and we hope that this insight will be a valuable addition to the things they learned during the exchange.”
Grampian-Houston Association chair, Brett Jackson, added: “We are very grateful to everyone who made the time to welcome our students and give them an insight into the region itself and its care sector.
“Grampian and Houston have well-documented, long-established links and we hope that this is yet another excellent way of maximising these for the benefit of professionals on both sides of the Atlantic.”
RGU head of School for Nursing and Midwifery, Professor Ian Murray, added: “The Grampian-Houston student exchange provides nursing students from both HBU and RGU a unique insight into healthcare provision within the USA and Scotland.
“This visit to Rubislaw Park Care Home adds the dimension of high-quality residential health care and provides a valuable insight into elderly and person-centred care within a residential setting.”
