Scotland’s orchestra’s finale of 2015:16 Season free to view on ClassicFM.com and the STV Player
THE Royal Scottish National Orchestra’s final concert of its 2015:16 Season, Ode to Joy, will be accessible to millions of online viewers and listeners across the globe, streamed live from the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on Saturday night (28 May, 7.30pm), to broadcast partners’ Classic FM and STV.
This is the first time the RSNO has live streamed one of its performances, a move which is set to continue in forthcoming seasons. In addition, Classic FM will be broadcasting ten RSNO performances from the 2016:17 Season as part of the orchestra’s 125th anniversary celebrations, commencing in October of this year.
The programme, conducted by RSNO Music Director Peter Oundjian, features Richard Strauss’ Four Last Songs, Beethoven’s Symphony No9 Choral and opens with a new work by RSNO Composers’ Hub participant, 22 year-old Lillie Harris’ remiscipate, inspired by the demolition of Glasgow’s Red Road Flats, once the tallest buildings in Western Europe.
The RSNO and Classic FM mark their 12th year in partnership, with the RSNO being Classic FM’s Orchestra in Scotland. STV (Scottish Television) has a long history of broadcasting RSNO (and formerly the Scottish National Orchestra) concerts, heralding back to the station’s inception in 1957.
RSNO music director, Peter Oundjian: “Together with our broadcast partners, the orchestra, RSNO Chorus and a glittering line-up of soloists will be able to present the final performance of our current season to the entire online community this coming Saturday. We have much to celebrate in this 125th anniversary year, and it’s wonderful that we share that celebration with as many as possible. Also, for RSNO Composers’ Hub member Lillie Harris this presents an invaluable opportunity to share her new work remiscipate with the additional online audience. We welcome one and all to our Season finale!”
Classic FM’s managing editor, Sam Jackson, said: “As the UK’s most popular classical music station, we are very proud of our long-standing partnership with the RSNO – Classic FM’s Orchestra in Scotland. We are thrilled to celebrate their 125th birthday throughout 2016 and we look forward to live streaming their Season finale on ClassicFM.com.”
Deputy director of Channels at STV, Elizabeth Partyka, said: “We’re thrilled to be helping the RSNO mark its 125th birthday. It’s wonderful that music lovers beyond the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall and across the country will have the opportunity to share the enjoyment of this landmark concert, live, and in the comfort of their own homes, simply by logging into the STV Player website. At STV, we are continually exploring new and innovative ways to connect with our existing audiences and new ones. Saturday’s performance is the perfect opportunity for us to reach out in a most positive and exciting way.”
Also this week, British independent classical music recording company Chandos Records mark the RSNO’s 125thanniversary by releasing a two-disc collection of some of the orchestra’s recorded highlights over the past 30 years, featuring highly-respected interpretations of Wagner, Webern, Richard Strauss, Holst (a former orchestra member), Prokofiev, Debussy, Shostakovich, Martinů and Adams by conductors, Sir Alexander Gibson, Neeme Järvi, Bryden Thomson, Georg Tintner, Matthias Bamert, Stéphane Denève and Peter Oundjian.
Ralph Couzens, managing director of Chandos Records: “Chandos’ collaboration with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra dates from the early 1970s and many of those recordings are considered classics of the recording world. This high-quality music-making has been maintained with a series of chief conductors throughout the decades and so I am proud that this relationship remains as strong as ever, producing inspired recordings, many of which have been included on a new 2CD celebration of the RSNO.”
