THE Edinburgh-located Tartan Weaving Mill, on the Royal Mile’s Castlehill, has embarked on its first international trade show in Tokyo, Japan, this week.

Edinburgh’s Gold Brothers – who own the Tartan Weaving Mill and over 20 other shops in Edinburgh – also operate a multi-million pound wholesale division for their extensive range of woollens.

The company is now seeking to develop export markets in the Far East, Europe and North America.

The company are looking to sign up retail partners in Japan at a Tokyo trade show this week for its tartan and other woollens brands – including Dunedin Cashmere Scotland, Ballantrae Edinburgh, Edinburgh Cashmere and Lambswool and Clans of Scotland.

Mr Dildar Gold, a director of the Gold Brothers Group, including the wholesale division. said: “We are very keen to build the export potential of our weaving mill as well as our wider wholesale division.

“An attractive opportunity came up for us to exhibit at a Tokyo trade show this week and two of our managers have gone there to offer a broad range of Scottish-themed cashmere and lambswool products.

“The Japanese market is a fantastic opportunity for us. We already know very well – through our Tartan Weaving Mill department store next to Edinburgh Castle and our other cashmere and lambswool shops such as Dunedin including its popular online shop – that the Japanese people love Scotland and tartan.

“Scottish companies have been trading in Japan for many years and now it’s our time to join them and enter the Japanese market.”

The Tartan Weaving Mill by Edinburgh Castle that weaves thousands of metres of tartan cloth each year has a visitor experience for the public to witness the weaving of Scotland’s globally-iconic cloths.

You can view the weaving looms and the making of tartan from eight large windows as well as read wall displays explaining how tartan is made.

The Tartan Weaving Mill and Experience is free of charge and is open seven days a week.
