THE St Andrews Hotel and Guest House Association, Stayinstandrews, have shown their support for full-time, unpaid carers by hosting a ‘respitality weekend’.
Six establishments – Pinewood Country House, Five Pilmour Place, Glenderran Guest House, Hotel Du Vin, Rusack’s Hotel and Cameron House – have each gifted a two-night short break for six carers and a companion on 20th and 21st March.
Ray Pead, president of Stayinstandrews, who led the initiative, said: “As an association, we wanted to help carers and this provides an opportunity to do just that as well as to show off St Andrews to new visitors.”
It is hoped that this successful weekend will become an annual event and will encourage more businesses to join ‘Respitality’ to give carers a break with Scottish hospitality.
Supported by the hospitality industry and Scottish Government, Respitality (Respite and Hospitality) connects local carers centres with hospitality providers who gift a short break or experience to full-time, unpaid carers. Fife was the first region in Scotland to trial the project, which was launched with Fife Carers Centre in February 2014.
Fife businesses currently involved in offering Respitality include Fife Cottages, Ring Farm, Rufflets Country House Hotel, Fairmont Hotel, Balbirnie Golf Club, The Peat Inn with more businesses coming on board.
Debbie McCallum, of Fife Cottages, commented: “We’ve found offering short Respitality breaks really rewarding. We’re able to offer them at times of year that suit us and the feedback from carers is overwhelming. I’d urge other tourism businesses to get in touch if they feel it’s something they can offer.”
A lively coffee and shortbread reception was hosted by Rusack’s which allowed everyone to share their stories.
“My husband and I have just enjoyed a great stay ….. food, service and accommodation were superb!”
“I felt the break gave me some ‘me time’ also which was fabulous and will return home feeling refreshed. We can’t thank you enough for your generosity, it is very much appreciated.”
