SINGING sensation, Michelle McManus, took on STV’s David Farrell and Clyde 1 stars, Diane Knox and Cassi, in an unique challenge to professionally ‘ice, frost and fill’ as many Empire biscuits, cupcakes, pineapple tarts and yum yums as they could – to mark the launch of the 2016 search for the best bakery in the land.
Voted best on the day, Michelle said: “Who would have thought icing an Empire biscuit was done by hand? I have a new found respect for the skills of our bakers and I will certainly be voting for my local shop in this year’s Scottish Baker of the Year competition. If you want your baker to win, you must VOTE NOW!”
The event took place at reigning champs, McGhee’s Bakery in Glasgow, to raise much-needed funds for the ‘Make a wish’ charity which supports children with life limiting conditions and their families.
Michelle, David, Diane and Cassi were put to the test ‘icing empire biscuits and pineapple tarts, frosting cup cakes and filling yum yums’ under the eagle eye of reigning champion, Gordon McGhee, and competition ambassador – couture cake queen, Mich Turner MBE.
The results of their labours will now make their way to Glasgow Caledonian University for students to buy in order to raise much-needed funds for the Make a Wish Charity.
TV judge, Mich Turner, will once again support the competition by compering the awards which will be presented in May.
Mich said: “I am really impressed with the efforts our guests made in this years’ challenge! With their efforts being sold for an incredibly worthy cause, Make a Wish, presentation was everything and the results were even better than I could have hoped for.”
The Scottish Baker of the Year Awards are the brainchild of Scottish Bakers, the trade association for bakers in Scotland who decided to search for the best baker in the land in 2012.
Now in its fifth year, the competition celebrates our love of a tasty treat from our local baker and aims to crown just one hard-working bakery Scottish Baker of the Year.
“With thousands upon thousands of pies, scones, loaves, savoury items, morning rolls, individual cakes and biscuits sold in Scotland every day, our artisan bakers work hard to keep us all going,” says Scottish Bakers’ Alan Clarke.
“This competition is based on real votes from real customers so we urge customers to vote for their best bites, every vote really does count – your local baker could take the title!”
