THE 2016 SCDI Annual Lecture will be delivered by Dame Ann Dowling DBE to an audience of 300 invited guests in Aberdeen on Tuesday 19 January 2016.
One of the most prestigious events in the North-east business calendar, this will be the 12th annual lecture delivered by SCDI since the event’s inception in 2004.
SCDI’s NE regional director, Ian Armstrong, commented: “We are delighted to have attracted Dame Ann to Aberdeen to deliver the SCDI Lecture.
“As a BP board member, president of the Royal Academy of Engineering and a distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Cambridge University, she has a tremendous career with a wealth of UK and international experience from which to draw and will I am sure deliver a fascinating Lecture.”
Dame Ann Dowling DBE is president of the Royal Academy of Engineering and is also Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Cambridge, where she was head of the Department of Engineering 2009-14 and ran the University Gas Turbine Partnership with Rolls-Royce 2001-14. She has held visiting posts at MIT and at Caltech in the USA.
Professor Dowling’s research is on efficient, low emission combustion for aero and industrial gas turbines and low noise vehicles, especially aircraft and cars.
A fellow of the Royal Society, Royal Academy of Engineering, Dame Ann is also a Foreign Member of the US National Academy of Engineering and of the French Academy of Sciences.
She is an honorary fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the Institution of Engineering Designers, and has honorary degrees from Oxford University, Imperial College London, Trinity College Dublin, the University of Kent and KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm.
Having served on a number of industry and government advisory committees, Dame Ann Dowling DBE is a non-executive director of BP plc, is a member of their Safety, Ethics & Environment Assurance Committee, and chairs their Remuneration and Technical Advisory Committees.
She is also a non-executive member of the board of the UK Government’s Department of Business, Innovation & Skills (BIS).
She is a member of the Prime Minister’s Council for Science & Technology and is chairing a review for BIS on enhancing strategic research collaborations between universities and businesses for the benefit of the UK.
She was appointed CBE by HM The Queen for services to Mechanical Engineering in 2002, and DBE for services to Science in 2007.

The SCDI Annual Lecture was established in 2004 as one of SCDI’s key events in Scotland and has been held in Aberdeen yearly since.
