AWARD-winning journalist, Frank Shennan, will be back in Scotland tomorrow (Friday) to deliver his successful one-day course, The Effective Freelance.
Shennan, fresh from being shortlisted in the State Street Institutional Press Awards in London, will deliver the course at the NUJ Scotland Training Room in Glasgow.
“The course has been running in its present format for five years,” he said. “Each one is slightly different because it is shaped to the people on the course, but the feedback has been consistently good.
“If everyone feels very confident about a particular area, we will deal with it more quickly and move on to spend more time on something else. But no area of freelancing is off limits and I always tell participants that there is no such thing as a stupid question. They feel free to ask anything.”
Shennan was recently appointed programme leader in Journalism & Media and Programme Leader in the new BA Journalism degree at Middlesex University in North London, commuting from Glasgow every week.
“I enjoy teaching The Effective Freelance because I relate to it so much, having freelanced successfully for 20 years,” he said. “I once told the dozen people on one course of my experiences with postmen.
“I would frequently get up at 5.00am to get a piece finished, working in my dressing gown, promising myself to be showered and dressed by 8.00am. But another job would grab my attention and, when the postman arrived at lunchtime, I would still be in my dressing gown.
“He would give me the self-righteous look of the early riser and I always wanted to shout: ‘Look, I’ve been working since 5.00am!’ When I told this story to the class, eight of the people there said: ‘I thought I was the only person who did that.’”
