Media Release: Praise for Ayrshire College’s peer mentoring project

Disability & Health Project of the Year 2015 - Ayrshire College

AYRSHIRE College has picked up two awards at the prestigious Scottish Mentoring Network Recognition Awards in Edinburgh.

For their ‘Peer Mentoring’ project, the Inclusive Learning and Care teams won the Disability & Healthy Project of the Year Award for the second year running.

While current HNC Working with Communities student Elaine McKinlay was recognised as a ‘Commended Mentor’ for her involvement in the programme.

The project was set up to provide extra support to students with additional support needs.

Students who are studying HNC Health Care, Social Care, and Early Education & Childcare at the College are provided with Peer Mentor training before they are invited to volunteer as mentors to students studying at access levels.

The mentors are able to provide a helping hand to the students they are supporting as they are already familiar with the coursework.

Elaine decided to volunteer for the Peer Mentoring project in her NC year and was nominated for the award by the college for being an ‘exceptional mentor’.

She continues to mentor every Wednesday with a Connect to Communities class at Ayrshire College and has her own set of puppets which she uses to enhance communication skills in students who may be reluctant to speak out in class.

Lesley Todd, Inclusive Learning Officer at Ayrshire College, said: “We are honoured to receive this recognition once again. Our Peer Mentoring project ensures a positive learning experience for everyone and we are seeing significant improvements in the self-esteem and confidence of our students.”

Elaine McKinlay said: “I would encourage others to consider mentoring as it is definitely not just the mentees who benefit. It allowed me to see different learning styles being taught, I learned new skills and my confidence increased.”
