PRACTICAL advice to the next generation of journalists and filmmakers is today being given at a lecture series being hosted by Edinburgh Napier University – between today and Friday.
The event, titled ‘Future-proofing your global media career’, sees several speakers today speaking about the likes of what commissioning editors are looking for and how to run a documentary production company.
The speakers list today includes the likes of director and writer, Robbie Fraser, who is founder of Pure Magic Films; Flora Gregory, who conceived and ran Channel 4’s foreign affairs series, Unreported World, for five years; and Callum Macrae, whose TV company, Outsider TV, has produced several documentaries for various television channels, including Channel 4, Al Jazeera and the BBC.
Conference organiser, Rachel Younger, programme leader of the Masters in International Journalism for Media Professionals at Edinburgh Napier University, says she created the event to address what she perceives to be a gap in media training.
She said: “What aspiring reporters and documentary filmmakers want most of all is practical advice on navigating the challenging economic realities of 21st century journalism.
“They want to learn essential practical skills: how to stand out from the crowd, how to produce great work, and – to be brutally frank – how to make money.”
She continued: “Many modern journalists are freelancers. So, we decided to do something about it, and arrange a lecture series providing practical advice on entrepreneurship in journalism.”
The lectures are being held in the state-of-the-art Lindsay Stewart lecture theatre at Edinburgh Napier University’s Craiglockhart campus.
The conference continues tomorrow and Friday.
