THE Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) is seeking a media and public affairs manager to drive activity within a fresh, dynamic and fast-paced communications and marketing unit.
Every day, SEPA works to protect and enhance Scotland’s environment, helping communities and businesses thrive within the resources of our planet. We call this One Planet Prosperity.
The scale of environmental challenge facing humanity is enormous, with a real urgency to act.
Our statutory purpose is clear, that we need to create environmental success in ways that, as far as possible, also create social and economic success. The two core services we deliver for the people of Scotland are regulation and flood risk management and we have established a radical strategy for how we’ll drive change – One Planet Prosperity.
Great communication is integral to the delivery of this strategy. We recognise that a world-class environment protection agency requires world-class communications that inspire confidence in SEPA, its strategy, services and people through clear, strong, innovative and collaborative communications.
As a senior leader, with demonstrable experience of building and driving media and public affairs teams, you’ll have significant experience developing and delivering media and public affairs plans – including developing spokespeople, engaging effectively with political stakeholders and issues management.
You’ll have an in-depth knowledge of the Scottish and UK-based global media markets as well as environmental journalists, with the ability to identify opportunities and news hooks.
You will be a trusted advisor to SEPA’s Agency Management Team and have the ability to manage complicated issues, turning these into accessible products for specialist and non-specialist audiences.
Your focus will be on our statutory purpose, given to us by the people of Scotland and the communities we serve. You’ll do the right thing, every time and, through your integrity, will ensure our reputation is safeguarded and that SEPA continues to be positively positioned.
Working as part of a wider team, you’ll support a 24/7, 365 days per year out-of-hours media and communications rota, with the availability to drive and travel, including out-of-hours as required (subject to COVID restrictions).
The fixed-term role will work closely with the head of Communications and Marketing against the backdrop of a global health pandemic, where the organisation is following home working requirements.
You’ll also do so in a period where the organisation is recovering from a significant cyber-attack.

Interviews will take place via MS Teams during the week commencing 05 April 2021.
