Your Noon Briefing: TD1, Shaun Milne appointed at Lucid PR, etc

BEGINS Art Grainger, on the website, media.info: “So, TD1 Radio in Galashiels has finally launched as an FM community station, after having been online for almost five years.

“It’s the first to launch in Scotland and one of the first in the UK under the new revised restrictions regarding advertising vs public funding/donations.

“This one could be worth watching because it broadcasts within an area for which the ILR (Radio Borders) has a TSA of 101,000 people (yes, it is that close). It is also broadcasting from the capital town of the region, which also happens to be the same town that the ILR broadcasts from.”

FOLLOWING yesterday’s report on allmediascotland.com about various well-known journalists leaving The Herald and Scotsman newspapers – in the main, under voluntary redundancy deals  – there’s another name to add to Media Movers

From The Herald, again under VR, Calum Macdonald has left as group digital head. He was in the post for four years, having previously been group head of news.

With a flair for compiling crosswords, it is understood he has both digital and crossword projects in his sights.

BEGIN the organisers of arguably the UK’s most prestigious documentary films competition: “The 2015 British Documentary Awards are now open for business as The Grierson Trust makes its annual call for entries to the most prestigious awards in the documentary calendar, more fondly known as ‘The Griersons’.

“All entries must have had their first UK screening between 1 May 2014 and 30 April 2015. This includes scheduled screenings within recognised film, television and documentary festivals and, for the first time this year, entries will be accepted which have screened on digital platforms only – such as Netflix, iPlayer, Amazon – as long as the screening was accessible by a UK-based audience.”

THE cream of Scottish sports writing could be soon approached over the next few months, to contribute towards a dedicated Scottish sports newspaper.

Following a recent spate of departures from a couple of the country’s top sports desks, a so-called ‘media empire’ is said to be hatching plans to launch a weekly sports newspaper, ‘with a difference’.

Prof. Alid Loyas, a media pundit told allmediascotland.com: “The idea of a standalone Scottish sports newspaper, similar to L’Équipe, in France, has been discussed by sports journalists for years. So I am not surprised by the news.”

But not everyone is convinced. Media academic, Polli Faro, said: “This is somebody’s idea of a poor, silly fad.”
