Your Noon Briefing: Campaign launches to ‘save our sources’, indyref and social media, etc

THE journalism website, pressgazette.co.uk, has launched an online petition, urging action is taken to ensure that legislation (the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act) is not used by public authorities to secretly obtain journalists’ phone records and identify confidential sources.

Says pressgazette of its Save Our Sources campaign: “Put simply, if police and other public authorities can secretly obtain journalists’ phone records at will – why would any public sector whistleblower ever contact a journalist by telephone again?”

BEGINS the well-known writer, George Monbiot, in The Guardian: “Perhaps the most arresting fact about the Scottish referendum is this: that there is no newspaper – local, regional or national, English or Scottish – that supports independence except the Sunday Herald.
