LESS than two months since its launch, a Scottish online news service has been shortlisted for a prize at awards celebrating the best of newspaper production.
The Caledonian Mercury has received a nomination in the Newspaper Awards, which have been on the go for 14 years and are held in association with trade title, Production Journal.
It has been nominated for the Digital News Service of the Year category and is up against belfasttelegraph.co.uk, europe.wsj.com,getreading.co.uk, guardian.co.uk, manchestereveningnews.co.uk and telegraph.co.uk.
Joining Caledonian Mercury on the awards shortlist is the Eurocentral print works, of News International, that produces, among others, the Scottish News of the World, the Glasgow Solicitors Property Guide and the Falkirk Herald. It has been nominated in the Newspaper Printer of the Year category.
Also, Aberdeen-based The Press and Journal has been shortlisted in the Regional Newspaper of the Year category.
Says Stewart Kirkpatrick, editor of the Caledonian Mercury: “I’m absolutely delighted that we’ve been shortlisted by the Newspaper Awards and humbled by the calibre of the other nominees.
“This is a real pat on the back for our journalists and commercial team, who’ve worked incredibly hard to make the Cally Merc a success.
“We have just increased the size of its writing team from 10 to 14 to match the high expectations of our readers and will be announcing the names of our new journalists soon.”
