AMONG the widespread coverage in today’s newspapers of the killing of journalists in Paris, at the satirical publication, Charlie Hebdo, The Scotsman’s cartoon is of an ink well, spilling red across a broken pen, while The Herald quotes Neil Rafferty, the Scots editor-in-chief of the satirical website, The Daily Mash, who now lives in the south of France.
Begins Jane Bradley, in The Scotsman (here): “Charlie Hebdo was launched 45 years ago after another publication, Hara-Kiri, was banned by the French government for mocking the death of former leader, Charles de Gaulle.”

THE recent former First Minister, Alex Salmond, is to pen a weekly column for both The Courier and The Press and Journal daily newspapers – starting Monday.
His signing up is today being trailed by each of the newspapers carrying the first instalment of a multi-part interview with Salmond, with him being quoted saying he has ruled out another quick referendum on Scots independence in favour of the country securing full control of all powers except foreign policy and defence.
