Your Noon Briefing: Edinburgh Evening News, British Sports Journalism Awards, etc

THE Edinburgh Evening News is to become available early morning from the beginning of February, as part of production changes at its HQ, involving a merging of the editorial desks of it and sister titles, The Scotsman and Scotland on Sunday.

The paper – currently available from around 11.30am – will be instead printed overnight so it can be distributed along with daily newspapers. It follows an UK-wide trend, mainly because of the costs of distributing a newspaper entirely on its own, as opposed to bundled with others.

Staff at all three titles were yesterday provided further details of the merging plans, including that around 28 applications had been made for voluntary redundancy, as the company seeks to cut between 35 and 45 editorial posts, with the deadline for applications being a week tomorrow.
