TO commemorate the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War, the Falkirk Herald has produced a 12-page supplement outlining – where possible – the service details of every local person who is believed to have perished during the conflict – some 3,000 people.
Local historians, teachers and even the current Provost. Pat Reid, were among those who assisted Herald reporter, Scott Mcangus, compile the listing.
Finding the names was relatively straightforward, but endeavouring to attach personal details to each of them was a task stretching back a few months.
Mcangus told allmediascotland: “Since around August, we have published a story every week in the paper relating to local soldiers who fought in the war. We asked our readers to send in details of their relatives and received a great response with loads of people sending in details, pictures and memorabilia which we have used. I’ve still got some we will be using in future editions.
“All the 3,000-odd names are published on the Falkirk Community Trust website in the First World War section which was easy enough so we had all the names pretty much straight away’ however, we felt it was important to try and get as much information about those men as we could for their families and our readers.”
The supplement accompanied yesterday’s edition of the weekly newspaper.

BEGINS the website, holdthefrontpage.co.uk: “A weekly [newspaper]’s offices are set to close after management decided they required too much work to bring up to scratch.
“Staff at the Cumnock Chronicle will be relocated 30 miles away to the offices of the Ayrshire Weekly Press, in Ardrossan, in a move which will see two receptionists’ roles at risk of redundancy.
“Chronicle editor, Douglas Skelton, is also set to leave the Romanes Media Group title at the end of the year to pursure a career in writing.
“Group publishing director, Keith McIntyre, believes the move will alleviate pressure on stretched journalists.”
