BEGINS an announcement issued by the University of Stirling: “Media graduates from the University of Stirling are taking their first steps in professional production, thanks to a new partnership between the university and a leading Scottish independent television production company.
“The three graduates – Monta Burge, Sarah McConville and Ehssan Shamoradi – are working with Tern TV on a range of current commissions, and will be with the company for 12 weeks as fully-paid interns. They will each develop skills in specialist areas, from research and coordinating productions, to assisting with post production and programme development. The posts are based in Glasgow and Belfast.”

BEGINS The Guardian’s John Plunkett: “Desert Island Discs presenter, [Scot] Kirsty Young, has revealed [at the Radio Festival, in Salford] she would take a Tom Jones song with her to a desert island because he ‘pulsated sexuality’ and was one of her favourite castaways. Young gave a frank assessment of the 74 year-old Welsh singer’s appeal: ‘I can only imagine he is a killer in the sack.'”

“The BBC is working with a coalition of global broadcasters – which includes UK commercial radio, the EBU, Clearchannel, Ibiquity, Emmis Interactive, NAB and Commercial Radio Australia – to research and develop ‘hybrid’ radio – a combination of internet and broadcast (DAB or FM) radio – for use in mobile phones.”

BEGINS The Guardian (here): “Time Out is to embark on a major UK expansion launching localised websites in cities including Manchester and Edinburgh.
“The free listings magazine will start the rollout from its London base with the launch of Time Out Manchester this week.
“Manchester will be followed by a dedicated Edinburgh site at the end of October, Leeds and Glasgow in November and Bristol and Birmingham early next year.”

THE well-known media commentator and Professor in Cultural Policy at the Centre for Cultural Policy Research at the University of Glasgow – Philip Schlesinger – has been appointed a non-executive member to the content board of broadcasting watchdog, Ofcom.
Says Ofcom: “Professor Schlesinger has been appointed to the content board to represent the interests of the people of Scotland.
“Philip has been a member of Ofcom’s Advisory Committee for Scotland since 2004 and its chair since 2009 – a role he will continue until the end of the year. His appointment to the content board begins on 1 December 2014 for a period of three years.”
