Your Noon Briefing: Shaun Milne, Castle FM, etc

ONE of STV’s most senior journalists is leaving, after believing he has reached a natural conclusion to his time with the broadcaster.

Former well-known newspaper reporter, Shaun Milne, has overseen STV’s move into local websites – which were then amalgamated into four city-based apps/websites – and has been involved in the creation of a social media hub for a local TV station now serving Glasgow and the west of Scotland and another soon to serve Edinburgh and the east of Scotland.

In a tweet yesterday (retweeted by allmedianews), he said: “So after almost 4 years I’ve decided to leave @WeAreSTV & seek a new challenge. Job offers & home baked cakes welcome.”

He is currently editor, advance & stream content (digital publishing) at the broadcasters.

AN Edinburgh-based community radio station could face punishment by the broadcasting regulators, Ofcom, for failing to provide information in a timely manner.

Says Ofcom, Castle FM had missed deadlines concerning the retention and production of recordings.

And so it has ruled: “Ofcom is putting the licensee on notice that it will consider these breaches for the imposition of a statutory sanction.”

BEGINS Greig Cameron, in The Herald: “Trinity Mirror [publisher of the Daily Record and several other Scots newspapers] expects to pay a dividend for the first time since 2008, but has set aside £4 million to deal with civil claims over phone-hacking allegations.

“It is the first time the company, which is now facing 17 claims, has set out a specific sum for these matters. The £4m adds to an amount understood to be in the ‘low single-digit’ millions that has already been put aside.”

Adds The Drum media and marketing magazine: “Trinity Mirror’s digital revenue has increased by nearly 50 per cent year-on-year, according to the publisher’s financials for the first half of 2014.

“The increase helped soften the blow of ad and circulation revenue declines as revenue dropped overall by 2.3 per cent year-on-year to £324.2 million. Ad revenue fell by 8.8 per cent to £108.3 million and circulation revenues were down by 1.2 per cent to £142.5 million.”

And, says pressgazette.co.uk: “Trinity Mirror will continue to ‘experiment’ with commercial partnerships and advertising to make money online rather than adopting a paywall, chief executive Simon Fox said today.

“The Mirror is launching a dating website, Mirror Matches, this week, to join a number of other offshoot websites, such as usvsth3m.com, ampp3d.mirror.co.uk and the recently relaunched Mirror Bingo site.”

FROM the Saturday edition of The Scotsman: writer, Stephen McGinty, considers the case of the TV reporter, Colin Brazier.

And while saying the reporter’s actions were “wrong” (Brazier did a piece to camera from the scene of the downed Flight MH17, lifting up items from a suitcase lying on the ground), McGinty is also understanding.

McGinty goes on to consider the merits or otherwise of pieces to camera, and also the BBC investigations programme, Panorama.

BEGINS The Herald (here): “A major new television series set in Scotland could serve as the country’s answer to Game Of Thrones, according to tourism chiefs.

“VisitScotland believes the much-anticipated adaptation of Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander books, which enjoyed a red-carpet premiere in California at the weekend, could turn Scotland into a magnet for fans of the show and the best-selling novels.”

ALSO says The Herald (here): “[Scots] broadcaster, Eddie Mair, told of his relief that Evan Davis is the new Newsnight host – because it puts an end to ‘tedious speculation’ linking him to the job.

“Radio 4’s Today presenter Davis was named as Jeremy Paxman’s replacement on the BBC2 show this month. Dundee-born Mair said it was ‘flattering’ but joked that BBC bosses told him he has a face and body for radio.”

The website, pressgazette.co.uk, also reports the tale – here.
