Your Noon Briefing: BBC to launch new radio station for Commonwealth Games, marketing awards win for The Leith Agency, etc

AN online radio station is to be run by BBC Scotland to coincide with the Commonwealth Games taking place from towards the end of next month in Glasgow.

Says the BBC: “Launching on July 16, BBC Commonwealth Voices will be based at the Forge Shopping Centre in the east end of Glasgow and will offer local people from the area a chance to gain skills in research, broadcast and social media, as they make content which tells the cultural story behind the Games in their home city.”

The BBC announcement adds: “The station, which is in collaboration with the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association, will share content with public service broadcasters from around the Commonwealth and will broadcast every day from 10am-4pm. It will also be re-broadcast overnight on BBC Radio Scotland, Digital and Medium Wave.”

One of its presenters is to be Cat Cubie.

THE Edinburgh-based creative and comms agency, The Leith Agency, has been named the Star Agency of the Year at awards celebrating the best of the Scottish marketing industry.

The awards, held last night in Edinburgh, also saw Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games named Star Marketing Team of the Year; Jim Kelly, of Story UK, named Agency Star of the Year; and Martin Reynolds, Glasgow 2014, named Marketing Star of the Year.

Says the IPA, MediaCom Scotland has earned ‘platinum accreditation’ for its CPD, which means it has been operating the IPA’s highest CPD accreditation – gold – for four consecutive years.

The other ‘platinum accredited’ agencies are: FCB Inferno, JWT, Hunterlodge, Leo Burnett, McCann Manchester, MEC, MediaCom London, Posterscope, Starcom MediaVest, Total Media, Woolley Pau Gyro and Zenith Optimedia.

THE creative director of the ‘future science, culture and technology’ magazine, WIRED, has been added to an already impressive roster of speakers scheduled for the annual Scottish conference held by the magazine publishers body, the PPA.

Says the PPA Scotland: “As creative director for WIRED in San Francisco, Billy Sorrentino drives the brand’s innovative approach to design. Leading the four creative departments of design, photo, video and production, Billy directs the cross-channel brand presence, including print, desktop, digital editions, mobile, social media and live events.

“Previously, Billy was the design director at Condé Nast’s editorial development group, where he worked on the company’s editorial brands on the creation of future content visions, particularly in the digital landscape, including launching digital editions for Condé Nast brands.

“He’s held key design and creative positions at WWE, Maxim, Blender, and Condé Nast Traveler, and worked across a portfolio of prestigious clients including the Museum of Modern Art, Sony Records, Adobe, American Express, Vogue, Vanity Fair and GQ.”

The conference, Magfest, is taking place in September.
