AS trailed over recent days, satellite broadcasters, Sky Sports, has agreed a deal to televise football matches in the Scottish Premier League.
Widely reported today are details of the five-year deal, which will include five games this season involving newco Rangers, who are now in the Third Division of the Scottish Football League.
There had been concern that the SPL might struggle to sell its TV rights – at least for a decent fee – following the creation of newco Rangers and its demotion to the Third Division.
Says The Herald, the deal is understood to be £14million a season.
Both The Herald and The Scotsman quote Barney Francis, managing director of Sky Sports, as saying: “We’ve supported Scottish football since we started, over 20 years ago, and have always wanted to continue that commitment.
“Our viewers will see the SPL for five more years and our schedule includes the opening league match for Celtic.
“We will also follow Rangers as they plot their way back to Scottish football’s top flight.
“Clubs now have certainty over their income and exposure across the UK and Ireland and we look forward to the new season.”
