A LIVE TV broadcast of newco. Rangers’ first match of the new football season is expected to have provided Gaelic language channel, BBC ALBA, with a record audience.
Although official figures are yet to be revealed, the game – played on Sunday, versus Brechin City, in the Ramsdens Challenge Cup – is expected to have delivered the channel its biggest audience since it launched in September four years ago.
Rangers’ involvement in the competition – which is played by teams in divisions below the Scottish Premier League – followed the club’s recent liquidation and placing into the Third Division of the Scottish Football League.
A spokesperson for BBC ALBA said: “An indication of the impact of yesterday’s match on BBC ALBA’s TV and iPlayer viewing figures will be available in due course but it is clear from informal feedback that there was extraordinary interest in this match and BBC ALBA looks forward to broadcasting further SFL and SPL matches in future.
“Sport is an important part of BBC ALBA’s programming and has been extremely well-received by both Gaelic speaking and non-Gaelic speaking audiences.”
Rangers won the match 2-1, after extra time.
