A former Home Affairs editor at the Sunday Herald is among the nominations in awards run by BAFTA in Scotland and which has just unveiled its shortlist for this year's competition, following an absence last year.
Liam McDougall now works as a producer/director in BBC Scotland's Investigations Unit. His documentary, Surgery's Dirty Secret'is an hour-long investigation examining how – despite being commited to a policy of ethical procurement – the UK's health sector is sourcing surgical instruments from sweatshops in Pakistan.
In March this year, McDougall – as producer, director and cameraman – travelled with reporter, Samantha Poling, to Sialkot in the north east of Pakistan. There, they filmed in workshops where they saw workers making surgical instruments for the UK market, earning the equivalent of £2 a day. While there, Poling interviewed a number of workers, including a 14 year-old boy who makes instruments for the UK market. He had lost two fingers after injuring himself while manufacturing equipment.
This is the first time that McDougall has been nominated for a Bafta as a producer/director. However, he was assistant producer on the documentaries that netted the Current Affairs title on the last two occasions: Britain's Homecare Scandal, two years ago, and Britain's Protection Racket, the year before that. Poling was the reporter on Britain's Protection Racket as well.
He was Home Affairs editor until the end of 2006.
The awards ceremony is taking place in Glasgow on the 13th of next month.
Also among the nominees are two programmes from STV: The Football Year’s: 1974 The Golden Generation will take on BBC series The Scheme and Neil Morrissey: Care Home Kid, in the Best Factual category.
The Lockerbie Bomber: Sent Home to Die is up against BBC Scotland’s The Walking Wounded and McDougall's Scotland Investigates: Surgery’s Dirty Secret, for the Current Affairs award.
Critically-acclaimed film, NEDS, has received four nominations including Feature Film and Best Writer and Director for Peter Mullen.
