A STRONG Scottish contingent can be found among the nominees for the UK’s most prestigious radio awards.
Among those in with a chance of lifting a Sony Radio Academy Award is BBC Radio Scotland’s popular show, Sportsound, which has been shortlisted in the Best Sports Programme category. Another contender from Radio Scotland is Daniel and Mary – nominated in the Best Drama Production section – a series exploring the issues surrounding alcoholism from a child’s perspective.
Also nominated is Dundonian, Eddie Mair, who is nominated in the Best Interview category for his relentless questioning of former Defence Secretary, John Hutton, on Radio Four’s PM programme. It was during this interview that Hutton admitted that he thought Gordon Brown would be a “disaster” as prime minister.
BBC Radio Scotland News is nominated in the Best Breaking News category for its coverage of the release of Lockerbie bomber, Abdelbaset Ali Mohamed al- Megrahi.
Also in the running for an award is Moray Firth Radio. The commercial channel has been put forward for the Station of the Year award in the category devoted to those with audiences of up to 300,000 listeners.
In the larger listenership category, Real Radio Scotland is among the contenders. The independent station, founded eight years ago, is up against BBC Radio Wales and Kiss 100.
