A TRIO of joint North-east businesses have shown support for a local cancer charity by taking part in a workplace wig off.
Waterloo Quay Properties, along with its sister businesses, Genesis Personnel and Northbey Power, opted for staff to sport a different hairstyle for the day when they took part in Wig Wednesday, and successfully managed to raise £890 for children and young people with cancer.
The UK-wide campaign, run by CLIC Sargent, the UK’s leading cancer charity for children and young people and their families, aims to raise awareness of the frightening experience of going through cancer treatments, which can often lead to children and young people losing their hair.
The three companies, which have a strong focus on community engagement, joined forces with Converged Communications, KD Marine, NSYS Services and North Atlantic Drilling UK, all of whom are located at Waterloo Quay, to wear a variety wigs for the day and collect donations for the children and young people at the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital.
CLIC Sargent, which was formed out of a merger of two long-standing children’s charities in 2005, is currently supporting over 30 children in Aberdeen and Grampian who are undergoing treatment.
Says a spokesperson: “More than 4,000 families across the UK are told their child has cancer every year, and the charity offers care and support at diagnosis, during treatment and throughout their recovery.”
Managing director at Waterloo Quay, Anna-Marie Eardley, said: “Across the group of businesses, we have a strong focus on supporting local charities and like to take part in fundraising activities whenever possible.
“Wig Wednesday was a fun way to raise awareness for CLIC Sargent as a team with colourful wigs brightening up the office, which attracted attention from our fellow tenants, clients and suppliers and helped to get donations in.
“Our team also decided to sell some homemade cakes to raise more money for the charity.”
Fundraising manager at CLIC Sargent, Jo Robinson, said: “Wig Wednesday is a great opportunity to get together with colleagues to have some fun with wigs while raising vital funds and show support to children and young people who may lose their hair through treatment for cancer.
“Waterloo Quay, Genesis Personnel and Northbey Power have shown CLIC Sargent a lot of support this year, and it’s great that they are continuing to raise funds for us while having fun too.
“Their fundraising efforts will help to make a huge difference to the lives of young cancer patients.”
