A STUDENT from the University of Strathclyde has been named Scottish Student Journalist of the Year.
At an awards ceremony held last night in Glasgow, Sam Shedden took the main prize at the Scottish Student Journalism Awards, which are open to students on journalism courses at Scottish colleges and universities.
The submissions were judged by a panel of leading figures in Scottish journalism, including Jim Wilson, editor of the Sunday Mail; Magnus Llewellin, editor of The Herald; Douglas Alexander, chief sports writer, The Sunday Times Scotland; Jackie Bird, BBC Reporting Scotland presenter; Calum MacDonald, digital editor of The Herald and Times; Lucy Adams, political correspondent at BBC Scotland; Matt Roper, digital news editor at STV; Richard Walker, editor, the Sunday Herald; Phil Miller, arts correspondent at The Herald; Mark Daly, investigations correspondent, BBC Scotland; and Joan McAlpine, MSP.
This year was the second time the SSJA awarded the prestigious Calum Macdonald Memorial Award, which was won by Glasgow Clyde College student, Ruth Mackenzie from Moray. Calum was a journalist at The Herald newspaper who died of cancer aged 32, six years ago.
The event was organised by Caitlin Dempsey, Laura McPherson, Leanne Maclellan and Victoria Nimmo, students from the HND Media and Communications course at Glasgow Clyde College.
