PEOPLE interested in becoming involved with Moray’s contribution to the upcoming World War I centenary commemorations are being invited to an open evening later this month.
The event at Moray’s Elgin library on Tuesday, January 28 will help set the scene for a wide-ranging programme which will run over the next five years.
A steering group has already been set up to begin co-ordinating events and activities to commemorate those who gave their lives and to honour those who survived.
It will be part of a Scotland-wide project to ensure that the sacrifice made by so many between 1914 and 1918 is never forgotten and will help provide a lasting resource for future generations.
The January 28 event, from 6pm to 8pm, is open to everyone and will include brief presentations from members of the steering group on what is being planned in the months and years ahead.
Suggestions and ideas will be invited from the floor and volunteers will also be sought to help with the Moray’s War project, one of the major features of which will be a website containing archive material, photos, memorabilia and information on commemorative events.
As well as the conflict itself, the commemorations will also recall what life was like on the home front while much of the male population was on active service overseas.
The Lord Lieutenant of Moray, Lt Col Grenville Johnston, a former commanding officer of the 2nd 51st Highland Volunteers, has agreed to chair the steering group.
He said: “It is a great honour to be involved in the centenary commemorations of World War I in which so many men from Moray made the ultimate sacrifice. Many of their descendants still live in the area and I know that they will want to play their part in remembering these brave individuals who gave their lives for their country.
“The open evening will be an opportunity for the steering group to set out where we are at the moment in terms of forward planning but also to listen to what the public would like to see happening in Moray to mark the centenary.
“I hope that as many people as possible can come along so that thoughts and suggestions can be shared to ensure that Moray plays its full part in commemorating World War I and those who took part.”
