A SPECIAL 16-page supplement has been published to accompany the latest edition of the weekly local newspaper, the KIlmarnock Standard, which is celebrating its 150th birthday.
The first copy of the paper – now part of Media Scotland, publisher of the Daily Record and several other titles in Scotland – was produced on Saturday, June 20, 1863 and had just four pages.
Today, it runs to 120 pages and is full colour.
And the front page of the current issue includes a congratulatory message from Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond.
Says editor Craig Robertson, just the paper’s ninth, said: “We are proud to serve the community of Kilmarnock and the surrounding district by celebrating achievements, campaigning where something is wrong and reflecting the events and goings on in our local area.
“Generations of our readers and advertisers have supported this paper and its hard-working staff and in our supplement we thanked them for that loyalty.”
