SCOTTISH Independent Hostels are reporting a boost in visitor bookings for this year’s Festive Season among their 130 member hostels.
Chair, Andrew Donaldson, of Comrie Croft Hostel in Perthshire, says: “With the demise of the big street parties, people are looking for an alternative and there seems to be a trend towards the traditional Hogmanay with gatherings of groups of friends and family.
“Hostelling is perfect for Hogmanay, offering excellent value, the camaraderie of sharing experiences and an invigorating start to the New Year.”
SIH Hostels, which are all star rated by VisitScotland, are located throughout Scotland from the city centres to the far flung islands.
Many remotely located hostels offer exclusive use at discounted prices for groups of friends and family for a minimum stay of three or four nights. All hostels have self catering and other facilities such as drying rooms and equipment storage for a self sufficient break.
Iona Hostel, voted ‘Best Eco-hostel in Scotland’, offers an elemental and cosy Hogmanay above a spectacular beach at the North End of Iona with optional skinny-dipping.
Sleeping 22, the whole hostel is available for £341 per night. Or try Hogmanay, Coll-style, at the new Bunkhouse on the tiny Hebridean Island sleeping 16 people for only £228 per night.
Rattray Head Eco-hostel, in Aberdeenshire, is an isolated beach hostel which sleeps 22 for £350 per night. With a full moon on offer at Hogmanay, guests are invited to use the campfire and free firewood for drinking, dancing and singing with no neighbours to disturb.
Many hostels are available on a nightly basis for individuals. Habitat@Ballater, a five-star hostel with ensuite rooms from £20.00 per person is ideal for bringing in the New Year.
Located in the centre of Ballater, it is perfectly placed for visiting the pubs and restaurants on Hogmanay.
On New Year’s Day, guests can climb Lochnagar, ski at The Lecht and Glenshee or for the less energetic enjoy a gentle walk or cycle along The Deeside Way.
The Jeremy Inglis Hostel in Oban is the embodiment of the traditional welcoming, friendly backpackers hostel.
It is open every day over Christmas and New Year and Jeremy will even cook a traditional festive meal for guests.
Many hostels are open at Christmas as well as New Year.
Hostel availability can be researched on the SIH website, as well as details of all the hostels mentioned www.hostel-scotland.co.uk.
