THE education magazine, the Times Educational Supplement Scotland, has been named Scottish Magazine of the Year.
At the Scottish Magazine of the Year Awards – run by the Scotland division of the Professional Publishers Association, in Glasgow – the magazine this evening took the top accolade after scooping three category prizes: Professional Magazine, Sales Performance and – for Neil Munro – Publishing Star.
Also celebrating was Connect Communications, a winner of four titles: Brand Extension, Business and Professional Magazine Editor (for Peter Nicholson), Staff Magazine and, for Richard Croasdale, Feature Writer.
And in a celebration of the awards’ tenth anniversary, a cover of cycling magazine, Boots & Spurs, was named the best cover of the last ten years, the decision following an open, online vote.
The illustration was done by Garry Marshall, while the magazine was designed by Matthew Ball, who, coincidentally, helped re-design TESS last year.
The awards – decided by a judging panel chaired by publishing consultant, David McMurray – attracted 130 entries which were then whittled down to a shortlist across 18 categories.
And the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement award – aka the Murray Cochran Award – was Kathy Crawford Hay, who set up the awards and has recently stepped down as head of PPA Scotland to operate as a publishing consultant.
Said Crawford Hay: “We’re delighted to see so much talent and achievement recognised this evening. The fantastic response we received to the Scottish Magazine Cover of the Decade category and the wonderful support shown by publishers in Scotland is truly overwhelming, and continues to show just how strong the magazine publishing sector is in Scotland.”
The Chairman’s Award, meanwhile, went to Stir, a magazine published by prisoners for prisoners with the support of Motherwell College.
