LEIF, the baby seal who was flown into Scotland from Denmark less than two weeks ago, is set to be reunited with its mother and older brother today at St Andrews Aquarium, in Fife.
The three month-old harbour seal has been kept in an isolation pool since he arrived to ensure he fully settled into his new surroundings after the long journey from the Fisheries and Maritime Museum in Esbjerg, Denmark.
His mother, Nelly, was moved into the main seal pool earlier this week to ease the transition, reuniting her with her two year-old son, Togo, who has been at the Aquarium since July 2011.
The introduction of baby Leif to the main pool will be a real family affair bringing together Leif with his big brother Togo, and mum Nelly for the very first time.
The re-introduction of Nelly to Togo has already gone smoothly and, despite having spent a year apart, signs are positive that the two seals recognised each other and are interacting well together.
Aquarium manager, John Mace, commented: “When we welcomed Togo to the aquarium last year we were delighted – visitors loved seeing Laurel, our resident seal, cheer up after being alone for so long. Now with the arrival of Leif and Nelly we anticipate that they will all be one big happy family.”
