Media Release: Develop your counselling skills at Stevenson College Edinburgh

STEVENSON College Edinburgh is running a Further Steps in Counselling Skills course from 26 April to improve and develop knowledge and use of counselling skills to keep them up-to-date and relevant.

The course runs for six weeks as full days on Mondays and is open to those who have already completed the COSCA Counselling Skills Certificate Course.

The Further Skills Steps course will explore attitudes and beliefs about human development, understanding trauma and conflict, working with addictions and dependency and gender and sexual identity.

Diana Gray-Buchanan, lecturer in Counselling Skills at Stevenson, said: “This course aims to enable students to update and enhance the skills learned in the Certificate course. The students will be encouraged to pay particular attention to their own reactions and internal process when offering a counselling approach.”

Neil Munro, manager at Positive Help, which offers practical help to adults and children in Edinburgh and Lothian’s living with HIV and AIDS, completed the course last year.

Neil would recommend the course to others and thought the quality of staff at Stevenson was “excellent” and that Stevenson College provided a “supportive learning environment”.

He said: “Often, my clients have complex needs so I must be equipped with the skills to help them.  The Further Skills course ensured my skills were up-to-date and helped provide me with a greater understanding of the issues.”
