THE senior assistant editor of The Scotsman has been made the paper’s deputy editor.
Peter MacMahon’s appointment follows Ian Stewart being made editor of the paper earlier this week, having been editor of sister title Scotland on Sunday and – when John McLellan was Scotsman editor, until April – Scotsman deputy editor.
MacMahon is behind The Scotsman’s strong ‘Scottish Perspectives’ comment section.
His career includes being Press Secretary to the then Scottish First Minister, Henry McLeish, and assistant editor (political editor) at The Mirror newspaper.
Meanwhile, The Scotsman is today reporting that five local newspapers in England – owned by its publisher, Johnston Press – have seen their sales increase by an average 77 per cent since being turned from daily titles to weekly ones. The five include the Halifax Courier and the Peterborough Evening Telegraph. Details of the increases emerged at the Johnston Press annual general meeting, held yesterday in Edinburgh.
