FOUR Scots entries have made it into the shortlist of annual UK media awards run by human rights organisation, Amnesty International.
Now in their 21st year, the UK-wide Amnesty Media Awards comprise several categories across the likes of TV and photo-journalism, plus the Gaby Radio Memorial Award which is made to a journalist who has been covering human rights issues for less than five years.
The Journalist of the Year at last week’s Scottish Press Awards, David Pratt, receives two nominations, both in the Nations and Regions category. The Herald/Sunday Herald foreign editor is up against only one other shortlisted entry.
Meanwhile, Stirling University’s Boel Marcks Von Wurtemberg is shortlisted in the Student category, as is Amy Mackinnon, from Glasgow University newspaper, the Glasgow Guadian.
And though not a Scots entry, well-known Scottish journalist, Callum Macrae, is among the Channel 4 team to receive a nomination in the documentary section.
The winners will be announced on the 29th of next month.
The awards “recognise excellence in human rights reporting and acknowledge journalism’s significant contribution to the UK public’s awareness and understanding of human rights issues”.
In a statement issued by Amnesty, Scotland director, Shabnum Mustapha, is quoted, as saying: “There are some amazingly strong entries in this year’s awards including four from Scotland.
“It’s been interesting to see how the protests in the Middle East and North Africa have been reflected in the entries, but also fascinating to see such a breadth of topics covered.
“The important thing is that these awards both reflect and to some extent nurture high-quality human rights journalism. This year’s impressive shortlist continues that tradition.”
