THE journalist, Sandy Gall, was the subject of a Daily Record feature today, ahead of the publication, next week, of his latest book: ‘War Against the Taliban: Why it all went Wrong in Afghanistan’.
The 84 year-old, who was brought up in Scotland, was one of the early presenters of News at Ten, on ITV, and, over two pages, he speaks of his career as a war correspondent. He proves particularly critical of Pakistan’s role in the conflict in Afghanistan.
Not that he will have been particularly well disposed towards the regime there when describing his daughter, Carlotta’s experiences in the country, working as a journalist for the New York Times.
It included, he is quoted saying, she and her photographer colleague being followed by Pakistan’s intelligence service, when she was doing a story five years ago, which resulted in the photographer being arrested and her computer and mobile telephone being seized, during which she was said to have been struck twice in the face.
“I was very angry. Pakistan is a police state and has killed a lot of his own journalists,” he is quoted, as saying.
