The weekly news and lifestyle magazine sold by homeless people – The Big Issue in Scotland – has garnered two nominations in a prestigious set of international awards.
‘In the Shadow of the Games’ – an investigative piece published in October concerning the plight of thousands of people whose homes were destroyed ahead of the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India -is one of five entries to be shortlisted in the ‘Best Feature’ category in this year’s International Street Paper Awards (INSP).
Edited by Paul McNamee for the past four years, the Glasgow-based title is also among the nominees for ‘Best Design’, facing competition from publications in Serbia, Norway, Brazil and the United States.
The recognition comes a little over a month after allmediascotland reported plans to amalgamate regional editions of The Big Issue into one single issue run from Glasgow.
The Herald newspaper, meanwhile, features in the shortlist for INSP’s 'Special Award for External Press', courtesy of an investigation by journalist, Billy Briggs, into the problems facing African refugees who have fled to Scotland.
The winners will be announced later this week during an awards ceremony in Glasgow.
