Eight Scottish newspaper groups are taking part in a competition for young people interested in a career in journalism as part of this year’s 60th anniversary celebrations of the National Council for the Training of Journalists.
The NCTJ has announced that the newspapers which have pledged to take part so far include the Cumbernauld News; the Dunfermline Press; East Lothian News and the Musselburgh News; the Evening Telegraph, Dundee; Falkirk Herald; Kilsyth Chronicle; Midlothian Advertiser; and the Southern Reporter, Selkirk.
Says the NCTJ website: “The competition coincides with Local Newspaper Week – the Newspaper Society’s annual celebration of the strength of regional and local press in the UK. This year, the Week aims to highlight how local newspapers act as champions of their communities, galvanizing their readers into action, supporting local businesses, and taking pride in their local area.”
Entrants have to write an engaging news story about local issues and the competition is open to anyone aged 16 – 18. Up for grabs is cash prizes and work placements.
The competition got underway yesterday and runs until thee 27th of next month. To enter, youngsters should submit a 200-word news story to their local newspaper for judging. Entrants should write articles about events or issues in their local community, school or college, or their family. It must be original, unpublished work and include at least one direct quote as the result of an interview.
Each winner will have their story printed in their chosen newspaper along with a feature about themselves, as well as receiving an award certificate and being featured on the NCTJ website.
A single winner from all the regional successes will win a cash prize of £250 plus a week of work experience and support with journalism careers advice. They will also have a special feature on the NCTJ website and in their regional paper.
