The finals of a competition for documentary makers – celebrating the work of the late John Grierson, considered the 'father' of documentary-making – are to be broadcast on the factual digital TV channel, Current TV.
The channel – co-founded by former USA vice-president, Al Gore – has acquired the rights to broadcast the Grierson Awards, after a three-year gap since they were last transmitted on screen or online. The programme is scheduled for 9pm on the sixth of next month. The ceremony itself is taking place on the second of next month.
The awards were established in 1972, the year of Grierson's death.
In a statement issued by the organisers, James Baker, Current TV’s general manager is quoted, as saying: “We are delighted that Current TV will broadcast the 2010 British Documentary Awards. Our channel is all about hard-hitting and ground breaking documentaries so what better place to champion the work of all documentary filmmaking than by celebrating and recognising their achievements with broadcasting these awards.”
