A number of Scottish newspapers yesterday carried a cropped picture of triumphant Ryder Cup captain – Scot, Colin Montgomerie – reading a newspaper in the wake of his team's epic victory over the USA, by a single point on Monday.
And which newspaper was Montgomerie reading? Ah, well it was the Western Mail regional morning, which was quite appropriate as the victory was won on Welsh soil – at Celtic Manor.
Old hands will remember that the sports snappers would never have settled for that in the old days – they always had a copy of their own publication in their possession, and it was thrust into the paws of the subject of the picture whether they liked it or not.
Of course, in these days of harsh economies, probably very few of the Scottish papers had their own staff photographers at Celtic Manor and the picture probably came from an agency.
However, the Daily Record can be excused for carrying the picture – the Western Mail is owned by Trinity Mirror, which, of course, also owns the Daily Record.
