A newsagents in Edinburgh has been shortlisted among the best in the UK, in a competition being run by representative body, the National Federation of Retail Newsagents.
Broadway Convenience Store in Oxgangs Broadway, Edinburgh, has been nominated for the Independent Community Retailer of the Year Award organised by the NFRN.
Say the organisaers: “The award is presented for a consistent and committed contribution to the local community.”
The competition final – which will be attended by some 300 people – is taking place on the 19th of this month.
Adds the organisers: “The husband-and-wife team have been shortlisted for the award for the high level of customer service they offer and for the central role that the shop plays within the community.
“Each year Dennis and Linda organise a free firework display and bonfire which attracts around 1500 people. At Christmas, they hire a professional touring pantomime group to perform in the centre and during the football season they sponsor the local under-11s football team.
“Within the shop they offer a free home delivery service, not just to their elderly customers but to anyone who would like it. As part of an eco initiative, they charge 5p for carrier bags with the money raised going to the local primary school eco group.
“And when the local Post Office was threatened with closure last year, they helped to coordinate the campaign to keep it going.”
The awards are now in their seventh year.
