THE deputy editor of the Evening Express in Aberdeen has been appointed editor of the Evening Telegraph newspaper in Dundee.
Richard Prest succeeds Gordon Wishart, who is retiring.
Says David Thomson, joint managing director of newspapers at publishers, DC Thomson: “Richard is bringing with him a wealth of experience in driving the success of an evening paper and we look forward to his contribution and direction in continuing to drive sales and revenue for The Evening Telegraph.”
Wishart was editor of the ‘Tele’ for the past four years and has worked with the title for 43 years. Under his editorship, the paper increased sales two years in a row while most other evening papers’ circulations were declining. Its most recent ABC figure is 23,180.
Prest joined the Evening Express as a trainee sports reporter in 1990, straight from school in Kemnay, Aberdeenshire. He worked variously as a news reporter, crime reporter and chief reporter before becoming assistant news editor ten years ago.
He was promoted to news editor in 2000, assistant editor in 2003 and became deputy editor three years ago.
It is believed he could be the first ever external candidate to have landed the Evening Telegraph editorship.
He takes over when Wishart retires early in the new year.
