A SWITCH of print works for The Scotsman newspaper began last night with this morning’s edition printed in Glasgow, following a deal struck with the publishers of the Daily Record.
The decision to have The Scotsman printed at the Cardonald print works of Trinity Mirror – plus a Trinity Mirror print plant in Birmingham for copies headed for England – is at the expense of more than 100 jobs in Edinburgh.
The closure of the capital’s Newhaven Road print works of Scotsman publishers, Johnston Press, is further underlined by the printing – for the first time today – of sister title, the Edinburgh Evening News. This is to be undertaken at the Lanarkshire-based Eurocentral print works of News International, publishers of the Scottish Sun.
Because of the Birmingham printing of copies for England, the deadline to have The Scotsman’s first edition ‘off stone’ is now an hour later than it used to be. There are three editions of the paper produced for the Scottish market.
Next week, it’s the turn of Scotland on Sunday to be printed at Cardonald.
Scottish weekly titles owned by Johnston Press are headed for the company’s print plant in Sunderland.
