AS reported as breaking news, yesterday early afternoon on Spike, the editor of The News newspaper in Portsmouth has been appointed the new editor of The Scotsman.
Mike Gilson emerged as the successful candidate, catching most, if not all, pundits by surprise, who mostly had former Herald editor, Mark Douglas-Home, as favourite for the job, with former Sunday Herald editor, Andrew Jaspan, as a late, strong possibility.
Gilson’s appointment is an internal one for Scotsman owners, Johnston Press, insofar as The News is a Johnston paper. And the 43 year-old has been an editor with Johnston Press for ten years.
These last three years, he has been a member of the editors’ code committee at the Press Complaints Commission. He is also on Johnston Press’ editorial review group, which advises the company board on editorial issues. He is chair of the company’s digital publishing working party, advising on ‘future newsroom operations in the digital age’.
