THE firing of a columnist at The Scotsman – for a comment made in an allmediascotland.com blog – yesterday attracted the attention of all the major reporters of the media.
MediaGuardian (here and here) and Press Gazette (here) were among those to follow up the dismissal of Nick Clayton, who wrote a weekly column about gadgets for the newspaper.
The action followed a blog published on Friday, about the internet being a threat to newspapers, in general, and sub-editors, specifically. In passing, Clayton mentioned The Scotsman in relation to property advertising and the web.
HoldtheFrontPage (here) was also among those to report the resulting relieving of Clayton’s duties.
The Scottish Organiser of the National Union of Journalists, Paul Holleran, is understood to have contacted the newspaper, with a view to exploring possible legal action on behalf of Clayton – who has been writing for the paper for 12 years, mainly in a freelance capacity.
