IN these cash-strapped times, it seems reasonable that, given the choice, The Scotsman should prefer to send a reporter to Argentina to report on the Scottish rugby team rather than to the Euro 2008 football championships, where the four UK nations are conspicuous by their absence.
There would have been a time, of course, when The Scotsman’s presence at every major sporting event around the world would have been taken for granted.
And perhaps readers were expecting a little more when reading, at the start of the year: “After last year’s momentous political changes, the focus of 2008 will turn to sport.”
