HE is widely known by his nickname, ‘Mr Snax’. Now, it’s official. BBC Scotland sound recordist, Ian Cowie, is Scotland’s Curry Lover of the Year.
It follows the inaugural ‘Irn-Bru Curry Awards’ which took place on Thursday evening, in Glasgow, which saw, among things, Charan Gill receive a lifetime achievement award in recognition of the Glasgow-based chain of curry houses he built up, to become Europe’s largest, before he sold them three years ago.
Cowie’s love of curry began, he says, in 1975, in Glasgow’s Gibson Street, when he was first starting out at the BBC. “I was weaned on Punjabi curry, which was a bit tricky when I then moved to Edinburgh, because there, initially, the curry houses were almost all Bengali.”
His two favourite curry houses in Glasgow now are Yadgar, in Calder Street, Govanhill, and The Village, in Nelson Street, Tradeston. In Edinburgh: Khushi’s, in Victoria Street, and The Mosque Kitchen, in West Nicholson Street – both on the southside.
