THE possible scrapping of Scottish banknotes – following a consultation launched by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Alistair Darling – has provided the Scottish Daily Express added ammunition in its ‘Don’t Trash Our Cash’ campaign.
The newspaper is demanding that Scottish banknotes are accepted more readily across the UK, but has so far been unable to persuade Darling to comment, let alone support its cause, which it describes as “a most peculiar stand for a Scottish Chancellor to take”.
However, yesterday First Minister, Alex Salmond, got in on the act, which meant other newspapers also carried the story, and the Scottish Daily Mail, like the SDE, made it its front-page splash.
