A TOURING cinema project in Dumfries and Galloway and a former swimming pool in Montrose are among 12 community cinema projects across Scotland receiving new funding to transform the local cinema going experience.
From Moray to Dumfries and Galloway and Lanarkshire to Perthshire, local cinemas have been awarded a total of £420,000 through Screen Scotland’s Cinema Equipment Fund.
Dumfries and Galloway-based social enterprise Driftwood Cinema receive funding to enable them to purchase cinema equipment for five cinema venues across South-West Scotland to increase access to quality cinema screenings to rural communities. They will also support a sixth venue to operate a mobile cinema screening programme.
Matt Kitson, director at Driftwood Cinema, said: “This funding from Screen Scotland will enable the five community based venues that we helped launch last year to put on more films in the coming season and reach a wider community audience.
“The volunteers shared our mobile equipment last year, so having their own kit will now enable them to have more control over when they show films, increasing the opportunity for people to visit and reducing the time and effort required to put on a film. It will also free up our hire equipment to support the five new venues that we will be launching this year, further increasing the access to the big screen in South West Scotland.”
Screen Scotland’s Jennifer Armitage said: “From community cinemas to touring operators, to multi arts venues and full-time cinemas, these awards are helping to improve and expand cinema provision in every context, increasing its reach, depth and inclusivity across Scotland.”
