AN idea that could help alleviate the widely-recognised shortage of affordable housing in Edinburgh is appealing for online support.
The proposal is to develop spare land in the Stenhouse area of Edinburgh, which is understood to belong to the local authority.
The vision has been nominated for a competition being hosted by Scotland’s Towns Partnership – https://www.scotlandstowns.org/future_town_design_comp_2018.
Voting ends tomorrow [Monday] morning.
The design pitch is part of an overall belief that council landholdings could be intensified, to include more housing and, ideally, more cultural amenity.
The proponents of potentially intensifying Stenhouse believe the current housing represents a skeleton around which which new housing could be built, with any surplus cash to be used to improve the fabric of the housing already there.
Any efforts to turn the idea into reality would first require community buy-in to the idea of essentially creating housing inspired by the classic medieval city centre of many European cities.
Gordon Duffy, head of Edinburgh-based architecture practice, StudioDuB, is one of the co-creators of the idea. He said: “Our proposal represents an opportunity for re-birth of this community, an approach also as to how we might help meet targets for affordable housing through densification of existing council landholdings without the need for sorting out brownfield or disturbing greenfield land.”
